WOMEN IN SIS

As an equal opportunity employer working within central government, the Secret Intelligence Service welcomes women applicants in all areas - Operational, Technology, Administration, Corporate Services and Language Specialists.

There are opportunities for women to work both in the UK and overseas, though we are realistic enough to recognise that some environments make use of the considerable skills of our women officers better than others.  We know, too, that women have particular concerns, some of which are addressed briefly in the FAQs section on this page, and others which can be discussed face-to-face throughout the application process.

In SIS we value the skills and insight that different individuals bring to our organisation, and we encourage people to develop new skills once they're here. Career progression and promotion is performance based within our HR framework. And there can be considerable variety, with opportunities to move between departments and to overseas posts.

We want women to apply.  While it may feel like a leap into the unknown, rest assured that you're certainly not alone in thinking that you don't know a great deal about the organisation.  We don't talk much about what we do, but we aim to give you enough information during the recruitment process to make an informed decision about whether it's right for you.

WOMEN IN SIS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Unlike other organisations there are limits to what we can tell you in advance.  We understand that this may cause some frustration, however once you are further down the recruitment process we can tell you more.  For now here are some questions that we tend to get asked at this stage.  You should, of course, make sure you have carefully studied the information on the site, especially the nationality and security clearance aspects.

Q Will I have to leave the Service when I have children?

A No.  We're a family-friendly organisation.  While not all jobs can be part-time, a range of flexible working arrangements are on offer to those who need them.  Women who've been in SIS for more than 12 months may be given 6 months' maternity leave on full pay.  And, with few exceptions, partners and children can accompany officers on postings.

Q Is it dangerous?

A Although some people work in areas of the world where crime or instability make the environment difficult, the majority are either based in London or in stable areas overseas.  We take the safety of our staff very seriously.  All those who are posted to teams abroad are given security training and advice, and additional training and equipment when required.

Q Will I be used as a honey-trap?

A Absolutely not.  The Service does not use this or similar tactics.

Q Are there any restrictions on the work I can do because of my gender?

A There are a very small number of jobs which, for operational reasons, are unsuited to women officers.  Beyond these it is just a question of skills. Female Operational Officers can and do serve successfully in a wide range of roles, and in parts of the world with traditionally more patriarchal societies, such as the Middle East.

Q What if my partner is unable to accompany me on an overseas posting?

A Operational Officers generally undertake at least one overseas posting during their career, though targeting and reports officers sometimes only serve in the UK.  We try to make sure your postings are compatible with your family circumstances.

Q Who can I tell about my application?

A You may tell your parents, close partner or spouse, provided that they are British. You should also make them aware of the importance of discretion. Please note that if you tell anybody else, your application may not be successful.

Q Do I need to be a British citizen?

A Yes. Furthermore, at least one of your parents must be a British citizen, or, at the very least, be able to show strong links to the UK. If deceased, s/he must have had such citizenship whilst alive. British dual nationals may apply but will normally be required to relinquish any other nationality before appointment.
