I joined the Service nearly 3 years ago as the new 'Day Lady' telephonist, not literally I might add as I had 25 years' experience in telephony and reception work in the commercial world. I work 8 hours, Monday to Friday but my colleagues cover shifts over 24 hours, 365 days a year. As you can imagine, there is never a dull moment as each day is different. The team is very close knit, efficient and happy. I like our working environment which entails working with a vast range of people of all backgrounds and levels in the UK and overseas.
I feel very privileged to work in the role of telephonist and enjoy the communication with the people I deal with on a daily basis. The first thing I noticed in the Service was that everyone was on a first name basis and very friendly. I felt we were all members of a very important family all working towards one thing ... the security of our country and that of our allies.
Frank, Security Officer
I have been in the Service for two years now as part of a large security force. Our overall aim is keeping the staff and building secure. I have a variety of duties during the day which include monitoring CCTV, searching vehicles and patrolling the building to name a few and with great camaraderie between our team our 12hr shift seems to fly by.
Due to the nature of our role we have regular interaction with all grades of staff, visitors, VIPs and the general public. The training I receive is on-going and since joining I have attended some interesting courses which range from single days to trips away.
The most enjoyable aspects are that I have a challenging position where no two days are the same, and the fact that everyone is friendly, which makes for a great working environment.
