REPORTS OFFICERS - THE SKILLS
Intellectual Curiosity: All of our Reports Officers have a real interest in, and understanding of, international affairs. Throughout their career, they will master a range of subjects, either geographical or thematic (ie terrorism) . It is essential for them to have the drive, intellect and interest to become SIS's key source of expertise on these topics.
Analytical capacity: SIS does not produce analysis or assessment, only intelligence. But Reports Officers require highly honed analytical skills to evaluate the intelligence that SIS produces and to draw the key points from large quantities of information. Rigorous attention to detail is also essential.
Communication skills: Reports Officers need to present SIS's intelligence in a clear and unambiguous written format. They therefore need excellent written skills. In addition, Reports Officers are the face of SIS in Whitehall, liaising with our customers in order to discuss requirements and brief them on our reporting. Our Reports Officers consequently need to have highly developed oral communication skills.
Team working skills: All of our Reports Officer roles are team-based and involve working closely with other Operational Officers. An ability to work effectively with others is essential. Senior entry Reports Officers are also expected to provide strategic leadership and to be capable of managing operational teams.
Personal qualities: In addition to the above, all SIS officers require the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, commitment and judgement
