Ministerial Oversight
SIS is accountable for its actions to the Foreign Secretary. The Foreign Secretary's responsibility for SIS can also be delegated to senior officials at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
As part of the process of accountability, SIS seeks the permission of the Foreign Secretary or of designated senior FCO officials for significant operations.
